The main thing

Jesus is the main thing.

That means…

  • Sex isn’t the main thing.
  • Business isn’t the main thing.
  • Morality isn’t the main thing.
  • Youth isn’t the main thing.
  • Terrorism isn’t the main thing.
  • Education isn’t the main thing.
  • Guns aren’t the main thing.
  • Entertainment isn’t the main thing.
  • History isn’t the main thing.
  • Money isn’t the main thing.
  • Family isn’t the main thing.
  • Politics isn’t the main thing.
  • A particular church or denomination or theology isn’t even the main thing.

What I’m not saying is that none of these things matter. What I am saying is I don’t know how to make any of these things the main thing while keeping Jesus the main thing.

There’s a problem with this when it comes to the church. People inside the church want their particular church to focus on any one of a hundred priorities. Certainly people outside the church are glad to describe us and define us by any of a hundred categories they feel we get wrong.

When it comes to preaching. When it comes to leadership in the church. When it comes to being a Christian. When it comes to priorities, Jesus is the main thing. It might not be easy. But it is simple.
